Edison’s offense lit up the scoreboard, then the Charger defense hung on to post a 35-28 victory over Corona del Mar in a nonleague football game Friday at Newport Harbor High.

Edison racked up 434 yards of offense--with quarterback Patrick Markovsky completing 15 of 23 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns--and scored 28 first-half points. But the Charger defense had just as much trouble containing Corona del Mar.

Corona del Mar running back Brian Hogan, who rushed for a school single-game record 272 yards on 20 carries, ripped through the Chargers for touchdown runs of 47, 62, and 67 yards.

“Hogan always surprises me,” said Corona del Mar Coach Mark Schuster, who made his debut. “Brian is an exceptional athlete, but I knew our offensive line would be one of our strengths.”

The Sea Kings rushed for 380 yards, but gained only 66 yards through the air.

Corona del Mar had two chances to tie it in the final six minutes, but quarterback Aaron Perlmutter’s passes just missed their mark.

Trailing by seven with 5 minutes 50 seconds remaining, Corona del Mar faced a fourth and five at the Edison eight. The Sea Kings ran a flea-flicker, with Hogan taking a handoff then tossing it back to Perlmutter, who spotted Myles Davis wide open in the end zone.

But Perlmutter’s pass took Davis just outside of the end zone when he came down with the ball.

With less than a minute to play, Perlmutter almost hooked up on a 22-yard scoring pass to a diving Bill Taketa in the right corner of the end zone. But the ball fell harmlessly off Taketa’s fingertips. Edison iced the victory by stopping Perlmutter for a nine-yard scramble on a fourth and 13 from the Edison 22.

“Both defenses looked like they need a lot of work,” Edison Coach Dave White said. “But I thought both offenses played great. I was happy to see our guys rack up a lot of points and yards.”

Running back Bradley Lisotto helped give the Chargers balance, rushing for 100 yards on 16 carries. Brodie Riederich chipped in with 66 yards on 10 carries, and Alex Forero rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries.

Edison scored on its first four possessions, with scoring drives of 70, 53, 72, and 60 yards. Markovsky passed to Dave Ogas for a 28-yard touchdown pass to cap the first scoring drive only five minutes into the game.

Lisotto and Riederich scored on one-yard runs to give Edison a 21-7 lead midway through the second quarter, and Markovsky found Sean Kurz--who had four receptions for 57 yards--for a five-yard touchdown pass to give the Chargers a 28-14 halftime lead.

Andy Linnen caught six passes for 64 yards, including a 26-yard touchdown pass from Markovsky which broke a 28-28 tie early in the fourth quarter.
