COLLEGE ROUNDUP : SCC Sweeps Past Chapman in Volleyball

Southern California College defeated Chapman, 15-9, 15-4, 15-7, in an all-county championship at the Whittier College women’s volleyball tournament Saturday.

Tournament MVP Genevie Wright led the Vanguards with 12 kills and Angela Tonavanik added nine in the championship match.

The Vanguard (8-1) defeated The Master’s, 13-15, 17-15, 15-11, 15-11, in the semifinals and defeated host Whittier, 15-13, 15-3, 15-8, in the quarterfinals.

Cal State Fullerton women’s cross-country invitational--Cal State Fullerton’s Heather Killeen captured first place and UC Irvine’s Laura Monson finished seventh. Fresno State won the team competition, followed by UC Irvine in third and Cal State Fullerton in fifth.

Cal State Fullerton men’s cross-country invitational--Bryan Contreras finished sixth and Todd Coulston placed eighth to help lead UC Irvine to a second-place finish behind Fresno State. Mark Sinderson’s 16th-place finish was the highest for Cal State Fullerton, which finished fourth.

In the Redlands women’s soccer tournament:

Southern California College 5, Biola 1--Joy Pelletier scored three goals, Jamie Gardiner had two and Amy Lewis recorded two saves to lead Southern California College (2-2-1) in the third-place game.

In the Newport Seafest Southern California water polo tournament:

Cal 9, UC Irvine 6--Omar Amr and Jean Michel each scored two goals and Tom Davis recorded five saves for UC Irvine (1-2).

In the Anteaters’ tournament opener, Matt Maunz, Jean Michel and J.P. Mathot each scored two goals and Davis added nine saves to lead UCI to a 9-7 victory over Air Force.
