PREP ROUNDUP : No. 1 Corona del Mar Loses in Water Polo

Freshman Robby Arroyo scored the game-winning goal in overtime to give fourth-ranked Foothill a 9-8 victory over No. 1-ranked Corona del Mar in a nonleague water polo match Friday at Corona del Mar.

Arroyo, whose brother Gavin plays with the U.S. National Water Polo team, scored the winning goal off a drive and a pick 32 seconds into overtime.

Foothill took an early three-goal lead in the first quarter but the Sea Kings, led by James Palda with four goals, answered with five consecutive goals. Corona del Mar led 7-4 midway through the fourth quarter but the Knights came back with the four goals, with Brian Brown scoring the game-tying goal with 1:10 left in the game.

Ryan Brown had nine saves for Foothill, which improves to 1-1. Corona del Mar is 0-1.

In other nonleague water polo:

Saddleback 23, La Quinta 3--Bret Trezise scored eight goals and John Roy added four for host Saddleback (4-1). The Roadrunners led, 9-0, after one quarter.

Troy 27, Orange 1--Scott Baker scored 11 goals and Justin Link had five goals and eight assists in the Troy (6-0) victory.

In a quarterfinal of the Long Beach Millikan Tournament:

Villa Park 13, Ventura Buena 5--Juniors Peter Cornue and Brian Pharris paced the Villa Park’s offense, combining for eight goals. Cornue had five goals and Pharris added three. Goalie Brett Galaway had six saves for Villa Park (3-0).

In the third round:

Santa Barbara San Marcos 6, Edison 3--Darren Wynns scored two goals and Kirk McMahan recorded 10 saves in a losing effort as San Marcos (2-1) defeated Edison (3-2) in third-round play. Edison took a 3-1 lead, but failed to hold the lead and were shutout in the second half.

In pool play of the Riverside Poly water polo tournament:

Costa Mesa 8, South Pasadena 7--Steve Popov and Sean Hylton each scored three goals to lead Costa Mesa (4-0) over South Pasadena (3-1). Popov scored the game-winning goal with 34 seconds left in the match.

Marina 18, San Diego Monte Vista 3--Stever O’Rourke had six goals, Lance Banuk had five and Eric Larson added four as Marina won a pool-play game to remain undefeated at 3-0.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Orange 11, Costa Mesa 7--Liza Scheller and Duyen Pham swept at No. 2 doubles for Orange (4-0) and Jeannette Maher swept at No. 3 singles for the host Mustangs (1-2).

Woodbridge 10, University 8--Yuka Suzuki and Brooke Stevens won their No. 1 double matches, 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 for Woodbridge (3-1).
