Orange County High School Football PREP EXTRA : Woodbridge Upsets No. 8 Foothill

Share
SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Foothill quarterback Mike Ford almost passed for as many yards as Woodbridge gained in total offense. But it didn’t affect the final outcome as Woodbridge upset eighth-ranked Foothill.

The Warriors used two first-half touchdowns and halted a late rally by Foothill for a 14-7 nonleague victory Friday night at Tustin High.

Woodbridge won despite losing starting quarterback Casey Harris and backup Ricky Jenkins in the first quarter on consecutive plays. But an inspired effort by linebacker Ian Dominelli, who missed last week’s opening victory over Pacifica because of a wrist injury, keyed the victory for Woodbridge (2-0).

“These kids showed so much heart,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said. “For any team to lose two quarterbacks and stay as focused as we did . . . I’m so proud of these guys.”

Harris sprained his left knee on the game’s second play. He was replaced by Jenkins, who normally starts at running back, but he sustained a broken collarbone on the third play. Gibson turned to sophomore Brian Millat, who passed for only 39 yards. The Warriors managed 221 yards overall. Ford passed for 215, but he and the Knights blew several scoring opportunities.

A fumbled punt return by Foothill’s Tramel Robinson led to a Woodbridge touchdown when Theo Wakefield scored on a one-yard run with 2:50 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

With 34 seconds remaining in the first half, running back Gavin Crew made it 14-0, scoring on a two-yard run.

Foothill (1-1) finally scored with 2:29 left in the game on Mike Ford’s seven-yard touchdown pass to Matt Bower to cut the Woodbridge lead to 14-7.

The Knights tried to gain possession again with an on-side kick, but it traveled only eight yards as the Warriors took over at the Foothill 43 and ran out the clock.

“This is a huge win for us,” said Dominelli, who also rushed for 84 yards in eight carries. “It’s enormous.”

The game also marked the debut of Foothill linebacker Ruben Vaughan, who transferred from Santa Margarita recently. Vaughan, a sophomore, didn’t start.
