SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

There was no dramatic rally for St. Bonaventure High this week. And Harvard-Westlake wasn’t fit to be tied.

Three first-quarter touchdowns by Harvard (1-0-1) started the visiting Wolverines on their way in a 28-7 nonleague victory over St. Bonaventure Saturday at Ventura High.

The quick start calmed Harvard Coach Dave Bennett, who had only 23 players suit up after last week’s 18-18 tie against St. Francis.

“We’re in a position where we can’t lose any more players,” Bennett said. “Hopefully some of our skill-position players can return next week.”

Harvard opened the game by going 80 yards in three plays. Running back Abed Abusaleh gained 60 yards on his first carry. On the next play, quarterback Derek Lemkin connected with Kadar Lewis on a 20-yard touchdown pass play.

Abusaleh gained 98 yards in 13 carries and scored one touchdown. A minor shoulder separation limited him to the first quarter.

Junior running back Topi Sanchez gained 118 yards in 22 carries and scored a touchdown for St. Bonaventure, which won its season opener against Paraclete in the final seconds. The Seraphs managed only eight yards passing.

Lemkin completed five of 11 passes for 104 yards and also connected with Charu Turner on a 29-yard touchdown play late in the first quarter.

St. Bonaventure defensive back Andrew Montenegro intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter, his third of the season.
