SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Running back Akil Anderson rushed for 212 yards in 25 carries and scored five touchdowns to lead Montclair Prep to a 48-6 rout of Horizon in a nonleague football game Saturday.

Anderson had scoring runs of 29, 18, five, four and two yards. It was the first big game for the 6-foot, 200-pound junior, who usually stands back and watches senior Darrell Dent capture the spotlight.

Still, Anderson praised the Montclair Prep defense afterward. The Mounties limited Horizon to minus-four yards and forced three turnovers.

“Defense is the center of this team,” Anderson said. “When the defense is clicking, we can’t be stopped.”

Dent, who is being recruited by Notre Dame and Miami, played quarterback and wide receiver. He rushed for 46 yards in two carries, caught one pass for 36 yards and completed his only passing attempt for seven yards.

The Mounties (2-0) allowed only three yards passing. Safety Henry Bell returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown.

Horizon’s only score came on an 89-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.
