Share

In a showdown of high-powered, pass-happy offenses, Hart High turned to its defense and running game Friday night to carve out a 20-7 nonleague victory over Westlake in one of the most anticipated high school football games of the early season.

Tailback Ted Iacenda gained 115 yards in 29 carries and quarterback Steve McKeon ran for 56 yards to propel Hart (3-0). McKeon also completed seven of 10 passes for 121 yards.

Westlake (2-1), which averaged 45 points in its first two games, could not move the ball in the second half. Billy Miller, the Warriors’ preseason All-American receiver, caught nine passes for 93 yards.

“We’ve got a good running back and a great line,” Hart Coach Mike Herrington said.

One of the top individual efforts was turned in by Ronnie Jenkins of Hueneme, who rushed for 356 yards in 20 carries. Antwon Nelson rushed for 276 yards and three touchdowns to pace Chatsworth.
