GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Westminster’s Long, Late Drive Overcomes Winless Santa Ana

SANTA ANA — The first Golden West League football game of the season proved memorable for Westminster and Santa Ana.
Westminster will remember the game because the Lions went 99 yards in the fourth quarter to score a touchdown to win, 17-14. Santa Ana’s memories will be less pleasant, thanks to a failed trick play and an 84-yard touchdown run that was called back because of a clip.
Santa Ana (0-6, 0-1 in league) had a prime chance to put away the game midway in the final quarter. The Saints reached the Westminster five before an incomplete pass brought fourth down. Santa Ana lined up for a field-goal attempt but holder and quarterback Brian Schwalm flipped a shovel pass to Jose Sagrero, who tried to score around the right end. He was stopped at the one with 6 minutes 25 seconds left.
Westminster (4-2, 1-0) had little trouble moving in for the winning score. Leonard Ibarra capped the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run on which he broke two tackles, then put an impressive move on a third defender to get free.
The two other big plays in the drive were a 22-yard pass from quarterback Jerry Allison to Todd Mann on third down and a 31-yard run on a reverse by Jimmy Adkisson.
Mann had caught a pass at the one and bulled past two defenders for a touchdown on the final play of the first half to put Westminster ahead, 10-7.
Santa Ana got the ball back with 2:06 left in the game and reached the Westminster 42 with 1:04 left to play. But on first down, Santa Ana was called for offensive pass interference and was backed up 15 yards. Santa Ana quarterback Brian Schwalm threw three incomplete passes and time ran out.
