SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

St. Bonaventure High senior Steve Ruelas rushed for a career-high 158 yards in 30 carries as the Seraphs beat Fillmore, 7-0, in a Tri-Valley League opener Saturday at Ventura High.

For his efforts, Ruelas was given the Jerry Dann memorial award, a perpetual trophy given to the top player in each year’s game between the schools.

Dann, a former varsity coach and teacher at St. Bonaventure and a one-time junior varsity coach at Fillmore, died in 1983 at the age of 48.

Ruelas’ big game picked up the slack for St. Bonaventure (3-3, 1-0) after fellow running back Topi Sanchez left with a hip pointer in the second quarter.

Also helping fill the void left by Sanchez, who gained 47 yards in six carries, was Ruelas’ twin brother Greg, who rushed four times for 14 yards during the only scoring drive of the game.

Sophomore quarterback Teohua Sanchez scored on a one-yard keeper with 5 minutes 17 seconds to play, capping a 14-play, 55-yard drive by the Seraphs after Sal Germann recovered Fillmore’s second fumble.

Teohua Sanchez completed seven of 14 passes for 50 yards.

The Flashes (1-5, 0-1) turned the ball over three times, including twice in St. Bonaventure territory, and finished with just 112 yards of offense.

Quarterback James Cummings rushed for 40 yards in eight carries and Danny Lomeli added 35 yards in nine carries.
