FRIDAY FOOTBALL ROUNDUP : Crenshaw Plunders 3-A Champion Pirates, 22-14

Adrian Anderson’s interception set up Crenshaw’s third and deciding touchdown as the Cougars beat two-time defending City Section 3-A champion San Pedro, 22-14, Friday in a Southern Pacific Conference game at Crenshaw.

Anderson, a junior linebacker, picked off a pass from quarterback Melvin Yarbrough and ran 40 yards to the Pirates’ three-yard line. After being penalized twice for illegal procedure, Crenshaw scored on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Ricky Lumford to Kabeer Smith. Anderson, who also plays fullback, ran in the two-point conversion.

“It was a big-time play,” Crenshaw Coach Robert Garrett said about Anderson’s interception. “It was Division I. Prime time.”

The Cougars’ other two scores came on Lumford’s 50-yard pass play to Drake Beasley and Farrel Payton’s six-yard run. Payton had 63 yards in 16 carries.

The Cougars won the City 3-A title in 1991.

Alhambra 45, Bell Gardens 38--Eddie Negrete of Bell Gardens High set a school passing record, completing 16 of 31 passes for 309 yards, but a second-half rally fell short in an Almont League game that featured a one-man show by Alhambra’s Aryn Hart.

The teams combined for 810 yards offense--432 by Alhambra--who got 27 points from Hart on three rushing touchdowns, a field goal and six extra points. Hart also threw three touchdown passes. Trailing, 45-31, Negrete, who surpassed the record of 297 yards set by Robert Perez in 1982, connected with Ricardo Flores on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 4:41 left.

The Lancers stopped the Moors on downs and took over at their 27 with 2:07 to play. Bell Gardens drove to the Alhambra 41 before surrendering the ball on downs with a minute left.

Bell Gardens had rallied from a 13-0 first-half deficit to tie the score, 31-31, on a two-yard run by David Villegas at the start of the fourth quarter.

Villegas rushed for 57 yards and three touchdowns, including an 80-yard kickoff return.

Jefferson 19, Huntington Park 6--Najiya Martin scored two touchdowns and Isaac Hatley rushed for 105 yards in 18 carries to pace the Democrats in the Southeastern Conference game at Jefferson.

Jefferson scored on its first two possessions to take a 13-0 lead on a 53-yard punt return by Martin. The sophomore wide receiver also scored on a 41-yard reverse in the third quarter to increase a 13-6 lead.

Randall Taylor had two sacks for Jefferson, which limited Huntington Park to 59 yards offense and held the Spartans scoreless twice on first and goal.

South Gate 22, Jordan 0--Hoffman Cortez rushed for 173 yards in 17 carries and a touchdown, while the defense forced five turnovers as the Rams cruised to a Southeastern Conference win at Jordan.

The Bulldogs, who were coming off their first win in three years and 31 games, had a chance to go on top in the first half, but safety Rony Landazuri picked off quarterback Kevin Harris’ pass in the end zone. Landazuri had two interceptions.

Washington 45, Narbonne 7--The Generals never looked back after quarterback Amar Brisco connected with receiver Gary Ferguson for a 43-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive, going on to rout Narbonne in a Southern Pacific Conference contest.

Washington’s defense thoroughly dominated the Gauchos, holding them to 133 yards. The Generals posted 230 yards on offense. Brisco led all rushers with 58 yards in seven carries and two scores.

General running back Dennis Northcutt missed the game with a broken finger. Northcutt, who is among the area’s top 10 rushers with 470 yards, is expected to miss at least three weeks.

Manual Arts 27, Fairfax 0--Earwin Burton ran for 65 yards and two scores in 10 carries and he caught four passes for 68 yards and a touchdown, as he led the Toilers in a Coastal Conference win at Fairfax.

The Toiler defense held the Lions to 45 yards on offense. Quarterback William Laffitte completed six of 16 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns, and receiver Reggie Duncan had two catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Loyola 37, Alemany 0--Junior Mike Vanis contributed 140 yards and three touchdowns in 12 carries as Loyola gave an impressive offensive performance during a Del Rey League game Friday at Alemany.

Vanis scored on touchdown runs of 39, 20 and three yards.

Cub quarterback Kyle Spielbuhler completed 12 of 21 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. He also scored on a one-yard run to give the Cubs a 13-0 lead.

Lincoln 22, Belmont 10--Defensive end Javier Pedroza’s 39-yard interception return late in the fourth quarter helped give Lincoln a win in a Northern Conference game Friday at Lincoln.

Trailing 10-7 after three sluggish quarters, Lincoln rallied when Jose Guevara scored on a 24-yard run up the middle to put the Tigers ahead for good, 16-10, after a two-point conversion.

Withe less than two minutes remaining, Belmont’s final drive to tie the score ended when George Rodriguez threw a screen pass that bounced out of Fabian Villa’s hands. Pedroza caught the loose ball and raced to the end zone.

Garfield 33, Bell 21--Senior running back Edgar Soto rushed 25 times for 116 yards and four touchdowns, including three scores in the fourth quarter, as Garfield rallied to win a Southeastern Conference game at Bell.

Soto scored on runs of three, two, 19 and two yards. The Bulldogs had 154 yards rushing. Quarterback Eddie Hermoso completed 12 of 19 passes for 177 yards.

Bell quarterback Gustavo Valenzuela completed 16 of 38 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. He also scored on a two-yard run to give Bell a 21-14 lead with 55 seconds left in the third quarter.

Venice 32, Los Angeles 14--Quarterback Patrick Regan scored on a three-yard run and threw a seven-yard touchdown to Anthony White, but it was not enough in a Coastal Conference game at Venice.

Demetrius Posey had three receptions for 23 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Eduardo Gonzales finished with five carries for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Record: Los Angeles 2-5; Venice 5-2.

Hollywood 22, Marshall 20--In the 22nd meeting between the two teams, Hollywood took a 22-8 halftime lead and held on to beat Marshall for the first time since 1954 in a Northern Conference game.

Anthony Martin rushed 22 times for 131 yards and scored three touchdowns to keep the winless Barristers in the hunt. After scoring on a 25-yard run with five minutes left, Martin had a chance to score the tying points on a two-yard conversion run but was stopped by linebacker J.C. Rivera.

Records: Marshall 0-7; Hollywood 3-4.

Salesian 21, Pius X 0--Johnny Flores returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Rafael Morales scored on a 52-yard interception return, leading the Mustangs to a Santa Fe League win at Roosevelt High.

Dorsey 26, Gardena 12--Jemell Gordon rushed for 94 yards, including touchdown runs of 50 and 15 yards, to lead Dorsey to a Southern Pacific Conference victory at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Fremont 33, Roosevelt 13--Fremont’s Delante Walker rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown to lead the Pathfinders to a Southeastern Conference victory at Fremont.

Fremont, which totaled 315 yards rushing, jumped ahead 14-0 on Walker’s 33-yard run and Robert Loera’s 22-yard pass to receiver Terry Johnson.

Records: Fremont 5-1; Roosevelt 3-4.
