Baron, Chapparo Lead Area Players in Charity Game

Tim Baron of Thousand Oaks High pitched two scoreless innings Saturday in the first of two charity baseball games pitting high school players and major leaguers against Southland college players.

The college team won, 7-3, thanks in part to a pair of two-run home runs hit by John Chapparo, a former Oxnard College player now at Azusa Pacific.

The second game--featuring different lineups--will be played today at Blair Field in Long Beach to benefit Children of Promise, a Los Angeles organization which sponsors a mentor program to fatherless boys.

Local high school players Darrell Dent of Montclair Prep, Brandon Hernandez of Saugus and John Wilson and Marc Lacson of L.A. Baptist will play in today’s contest, which begins at 1:15 p.m. A home run derby and autograph session is at 12:45.

Torey Lovullo (Seattle Mariners), formerly of Montclair Prep, and Brian Hunter (Cincinnati Reds) are two of the pros playing today.
