Six-Minute Offense Wins for Westmont : Men’s soccer: Two Warrior goals early in second half beat Master’s in regional final, 2-0.

For Westmont College, it was the perfect time for a visit from a long lost relative.

After a listless first half, Westmont gained the momentum by scoring twice in a six-minute span Saturday, fueling a 2-0 victory over The Master’s in the championship soccer match of the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Far West Regional.

“Any time you can start a half (like that) you can get (momentum) on your side and it really occurred for the final 45 minutes for us,” said Westmont Coach Dave Wolf, whose third-ranked Warriors (20-3) advanced to the NAIA championships.

After a scoreless first half, Westmont needed just over a minute to score as Trevor Schuurman dribbled through traffic and beat goalkeeper Kris Bage from 15 yards.

Five minutes later, Ben Hook converted Shuurman’s pass into the second goal.

Master’s (15-4-2) did not have a shot on goal in the second half and has only a slim chance for an at-large bid to next week’s 12-team championships.

The Mustangs lost to Westmont earlier this season, 3-0, and have not scored in their last four matches (390 minutes) against the Warriors.
