ROUNDUP : Master’s Gets Push in Opener

Most athletes try to follow their coaches’ directives.

The Master’s College basketball player James Mosley was more focused on his father’s advice when the Mustangs opened their season Wednesday night against Walla Walla.

“My dad always told us to push ourselves,” said the Mustang junior guard, whose father died last week.

“That’s exactly what I’m going to do this year.”

His father would have been proud.

Mosley scored 26 points as the host Mustangs walloped Walla Walla, 116-46, picking up where they left off last year in Bill Oates’ first season as coach.

The game was over from the start.

Mosley’s three-pointer to open the scoring sent the Mustangs on their way to a 12-0 lead. They increased the margin to 63-24 at halftime.

Mike Penberthy and Leo Gorauskas each added added 17 points for Master’s.

Gorauskas, who scored all of his points in the first half, also had eight rebounds.

The Mustangs also dominated on the boards, outrebounding Walla Walla, 49-22. The Master’s also forced 36 turnovers.

John Mosley, no relation to James, had six steals.

Matt Kordik scored 13 points and Doug Leaman added 10 for the Master’s.

Kevin McCloskey scored 10 points for Walla Walla, while Rock Braithwaite contributed nine.

“They’re great athletes and they’re well-coached,” Braithwaite said of the Mustangs, who had a 28-5 record and reached the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics national tournament for the first time in school history last season.

“I’m glad I had the opportunity to play them.”

In other college games:

Cuesta 76, College of the Canyons 61--The Cougars were outscored, 45-21, in the second half and fell to 0-3 in a nonconference loss at San Luis Obispo.

Malik Clark scored 14 points, Rashed Dorsey added 13 and Kwesi Fulton had 12 for the Cougars, who led, 40-31, at halftime.

Sequoias 84, Antelope Valley 76--The Marauders (1-2) couldn’t overcome a 38-28 halftime deficit at Lancaster.

Sequoias guard Joe Wyatt, a sophomore from Kennedy High, had 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

He made four of 10 three-point attempts.

Jason Adams also scored 24 points for the Giants (3-0) in the nonconference game.

Orville Turner scored 23 points for Antelope Valley.

MEN’S SOCCER

The Master’s 3, Asbury (Ky.) 0--The Mustangs advanced to the semifinals of the eight-team National Christian College Athletic Assn. postseason tournament at Cleveland, Tenn.

The Mustangs, who outshot Asbury, 26-4, scored first in the 28th minute when Bryan Lee converted Dudley Hitchman’s crossing pass.

Eighteen minutes into the second half, Lee, with his back to the goal, set up Paul Smith with a back pass.

Stephen Janho capped the scoring in the 87th minute.

Goalie Kris Bage had four saves for The Master’s, which will play Jeneva (Pa.) today.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 98, Walla Walla 40--Deborah Prociw had 18 points and 10 rebounds at The Master’s in a season opener for both teams.

The game marked the debut of Master’s first-year Coach Susan Anderson, who played for Athletes In Action the past two seasons.

The Master’s led, 48-23, at the half and increased the difference to as many as 60 points.

The Mustangs outrebounded Walla Walla, which has no nickname, 53-26, and forced 52 turnovers.

Four other Mustangs reached double figures.

Jody Agueda scored 16 points, while Kim Devries and Krissi Trower each scored 14 points.

Connie Van Wingerden contributed 10 points.

Lisa States scored 14 points and Jennifer Davis added nine for Walla Walla.

The Master’s had a 4-17 record during the 1993-94 season.
