Share

The Thousand Oaks High boys’ cross-country team won its second consecutive Division I title in the CIF State championships Saturday at Woodward Park, but Peninsula upset the Lancers in the girls’ race.

The Panthers’ 82-91 victory prevented Thousand Oaks from becoming the first school to win both state Division I titles in the same year.

Thousand Oaks, paced by the 3-6-9 finish of seniors Jeff Fischer, Keith O’Doherty and Kevin Marsden, posted a 38-106 victory over runner-up Chula Vista in the boys’ race.

Although the Lancers’ 68-point victory was three points greater than last year, the cumulative time of their top five runners (79 minutes 9 seconds) was well off their course record (77:59) from 1993.

Improved performances from its Nos. 2-5 runners keyed Peninsula in the girls’ race.

Thousand Oaks had placed three runners ahead of the Panthers’ No. 2 runner in winning the Southern Section championships last week, but Peninsula had four girls in front of the Lancers’ fourth, and five in front of their fifth, on Saturday.

Julia Stamps of Santa Rosa continued her superb sophomore season by winning the Division I girls’ title in 17:06. The time broke the 5,000-meter course record of 17:13 set by Milena Glusac of Fallbrook in 1991.

Jason Balkman of San Jose Lynbrook won the Division I boys’ title with a time of 15:15, finishing five seconds in front of Eleazer Hernandez of Camarillo.
