OUTLOOK
Holmes, a first-year coach, takes over a team that has struggled. The Vikings graduated their two best players--Eric Endsley and Andres Nieto--and three other standouts decided not to play this season. But Holmes is undaunted and refuses to sell his team short. “Our goal is to make the playoffs,” Holmes said. “I think Los Alamitos is the best team in the league and Fountain Valley is right behind them. Then I think it’s a scramble.” Worthy is Marina’s only returner who saw significant playing time last season, averaging six points. Bolton averaged three points as a reserve last season and will play small forward; Boyd will start at center. “Boyd is inexperienced but he hustles,” Holmes said. Onishi moves up from a JV team that was 4-10 in league last season, but Holmes said his steadiness helped him earn the starting point guard spot. Perna, who hasn’t played since his freshman year at Ocean View, will start at power forward. He is 6-1, 205 pounds, and Holmes likes his toughness under the boards. Meyer, who helped the sophomore team tie for the league title, will provide some outside shooting.
