Montclair Prep’s Akil Anderson rushed for 216 of the Mounties’ 272 yards to pace a 14-6 victory over Kilpatrick in a Southern Section Division X semifinal playoff game Saturday night at Kennedy High.

Anderson’s third consecutive 200-yards-plus playoff game vaulted the Mounties into a championship game for the third time in five years. Montclair Prep, which won the Division IX title in 1992 and the Division X championship in 1990, will face Orange Lutheran on Saturday.

Anderson, who has rushed for 871 yards and eight touchdowns in three playoff games, did not score against Kilpatrick, but he had nifty runs of 35 and 42 yards and left no question as to who was moving the Mounties down the field.

“I think any back would like to get the ball 30 times a game and help his team get a victory,” said Anderson, whose carries accounted for 31 of the Mounties’ 47 plays.

Meanwhile, Montclair Prep limited Kilpatrick to only 148 yards.

“That’s the key to this team,” Anderson said. “Everything is focused around the defense.”

Montclair Prep (10-1), which limited Kilpatrick to 23 yards in the first half, broke down only on a 64-yard touchdown run by Mario Qualls, who finished with 101 yards in 15 carries.

Less than two minutes after Montclair Prep linebacker Rashawn Jones returned an interception 15 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead, Qualls took a pitch, ran off tackle and scored to pull Kilpatrick to within 14-6 late in the third quarter.

Kilpatrick (10-3), which beat Montclair Prep, 26-14, earlier in the season, had three possessions in the fourth quarter, but could not put a drive together.

Kilpatrick quarterback Cesar Cuevas threw a desperation pass from midfield to the Montclair Prep five-yard line on the game’s final play, but the pass was broken up by Henry Bell.

Darrell Dent gave Montclair Prep its first points when he scored on a nine-yard scramble less than four minutes into the game.
