OUTLOOK

The Pioneers are hoping a trio of sophomores will be enough to lead them into the playoffs in the four-team Academy League. Yang is a dramatically improved power forward who will be the only Pioneer with varsity playing time. Bui weighs just 90 pounds, but uses the size to his advantage to slip inside opposing defenses. Dignan said Bui has extraordinary court vision. Payne is St. Michael’s biggest player and has good quickness to the basket. Dignan is working on some other offensive moves for Payne, such as back-to-the-basket shots, to take advantage of his size. St. Michael’s had two other talented players who would have helped the team, but the school’s principal instructed them to concentrate on their duties as elected student government officers. One particular player who will be sorely missed is Gabrial Trebels, the team’s leading scorer last season, who has been elected student-body president and will not have the school’s permission to participate in basketball.
