Freshman guard Rafer Alston scored seven of his 16 points in overtime Saturday night to lead Ventura College to an 82-75 victory over Moorpark in the championship game of the Moorpark tournament.

Alston made five of six free throws, the last giving his team an 80-73 lead with 19 seconds to play in the extra period.

Moorpark (6-3) led most of the game. The Raiders opened a 47-37 lead when Jaime Jaquez scored on a layup three minutes into the second half.

But Ventura (9-0) stayed close behind a tough full-court defense, which led to numerous baskets off Moorpark turnovers.

Ventura finally took the lead, 66-65, when Curtis Gaines, the tournament’s most valuable player, scored inside with 1 minute 30 seconds left in regulation. Alston followed with a jump shot to give Ventura a three-point lead with 35 seconds to play.

But Moorpark forward David Fennell, who scored 14 points, made his fourth three-point basket to tie the score, 68-68, with 20 seconds to play.

Both teams had a chance to win in regulation, but missed last-second shots.

Jaquez led all scorers with 17 points. He also had five rebounds.
