HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Shattering Experience at Providence

South Bay Lutheran’s 66-53 nonleague boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday night at Providence High ended with a bang.

The game was called with 1 minute 40 seconds to play because South Bay Lutheran’s Landon Turner smashed the backboard attempting a dunk. Providence, a private school in Burbank with an enrollment of 385, had no extras.

“It’ll be half-court practices for a couple days now,” Providence Coach Paul Sutton said.

Cleveland 60, Ventura 58--Junior forward James Brignac hit a three-pointer with 11 seconds to go, giving the Cavaliers (1-2) a dramatic victory in the first round of the Beverly Hills tournament. Brignac finished with 28 points.

Crenshaw 108, Hoover 57--The Tornadoes actually outscored the two-time defending state champion Cougars in the third quarter, 15-14, but were buried under the Crenshaw onslaught in a nonleague game at Hoover.

Raymond Palmer scored 25 points for Crenshaw (4-0). Danny Clarke scored 20 points for Hoover (1-3) and center Jack Bartanyan added 17.

Crespi 80, Mesrobian 51--Gianandrea Marcaccini scored 40 points for the Celts (3-1) in a first-round game of the El Segundo tournament.

Kennedy 79, Sylmar 63--Senior forward Jelani Janisse scored 17 of his 21 points in the first half, as the Golden Cougars (2-0) pulled away from Sylmar in a nonleague game at Granada Hills. Nakia Gordon added 14 points for Kennedy.

Sylmar’s Joe Guerra scored 21 points, including five three-pointers.

St. Francis 66, South Pasadena 40--Raul Lepe scored 17 points and Ted Steben added 15 points and 17 rebounds for St. Francis in a nonleague game at La Canada.

Mihail Papadopulos added 10 points and 11 assists for the Golden Knights (3-1), who won their third game in a row.

Moorpark 68, Rio Mesa 52--The Musketeers limited Rio Mesa to only nine points in the first half of a nonleague game at Moorpark.

Jesse Ahearn scored 17 and teammate Mike McKenzie added 15 for the Musketeers (4-2). Cory Wilson had 13 for Rio Mesa (0-1).

Montclair Prep 74, Salesian 42--Reed Berglund scored 34 points for the Mounties in a first round game of the Faith Baptist tournament.

Berglund also added eight rebounds, eight assists and eight steals for Montclair Prep (5-0).

Carlos Roubicek controlled the inside for the Mounties with 15 rebounds and 12 blocked shots.

Monroe 87, Narbonne 62--Bobby Reed scored 17 points and had nine rebounds and five other players hit double figures for the Vikings (3-2) in a nonleague game at Narbonne.

Buena 77, Redondo Beach 70--John Tobias had 22 points for the Bulldogs (3-1) in a first-round victory in Beverly Hills tournament.

Harvard-Westlake 85, Brentwood 69--Jason Collins had 29 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Wolverines (4-0) in a nonleague victory at Brentwood.

Jarron Collins added 20 points and five steals for Harvard, while Ben Robbins had 14 points and 11 assists.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 51, Fontana 37--Sophomore center Jennifer Detmer had 18 points for the the Lancers (1-0) in a first-round victory at the Brea-Olinda tournament.

Sylmar 59, Kennedy 55--Sonya Ramirez hit a pair of free throws with 2 1/2 minutes left to put the Spartans ahead for good, 54-52, in a nonleague game at Sylmar.

Nadra Manley scored 16 points for Sylmar, but fouled out midway through the final period. Ramirez added 11 points for the Spartans.

Tami Roff had 17 for Kennedy.

Crescenta Valley 63, Burroughs 38--Michelle Greco scored 18 points, had 12 rebounds and nine steals for the Falcons (5-1) at Burroughs. Teammate Amirah Leonard also scored 18 points, while Kellie Labor added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Taft 50, Van Nuys 39--Nyoki McKeith scored 16 points for the Toreadors in a nonleague game at Taft.

Vanessa Dunn added 10 points, while Crystal Griffin had eight points and 14 rebounds.

Oak Park 50, Louisville 38--Twins Alexa and Alisha Valavanis combined for 29 points in the Eagles’ nonleague victory at Oak Park.

San Fernando 64, Reseda 29--The Tigers (1-3) took a 42-7 lead at halftime and cruised to a nonleague victory at San Fernando.

Poly 53, El Camino Real 29--Senior Dora Lopez scored 10 of her game-high 18 points as the host Parrots (4-2) were putting the nonconference game away with a 19-3 first quarter. Lopez also had five assists and six steals.

Village Christian 54, Quartz Hill 40--Lindy James had 25 points and 12 rebounds while Trisha Palmquist added 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the visiting Crusaders (4-2) in a nonleague victory.

Quartz Hill falls to 3-2 with the loss.

Palmdale 46, Hesperia 32--Edniesha Curry led the Falcons (1-0) with 20 points in a nonleague game at Hesperia.

Montclair Prep 48, St. Genevieve 22--Qahira El Amin scored 14 points and Laura Power added 12 for host Montclair Prep (2-1) in the nonleague game.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Poly 4, Sherman Oaks CES 0--Tony Suarez and Luis Mesta each scored two goals for the Parrots (5-2-1, 3-0-1) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference match at SOCES.

Crespi 1, Highland 1--Cappy Roberts scored for the Celts (0-0-1) in the nonleague match.

Moorpark 1, San Marcos 0--Pat Russo scored the lone goal for the Musketeers (4-0) in a nonleague match at Moorpark.

Palmdale 4, Rim of the World 0--Junior midfielder Murad Dibbini scored all four goals for the the Falcons in the second day of pool play in the Hesperia Tournament. Palmdale (4-1) split its first two matches in the tournament.
