HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS : Dorsey’s Segura Denied in Repeat Bid

Dorsey High’s Kendra Segura, who won the girl’s City Section tennis singles championship last year as a freshman, was defeated in the final Friday by senior Julia Feldman of Taft, 6-4, 6-0, at the Studio City Racquet Centre.
Segura beat Feldman in last year’s semifinals, then defeated Taft’s Brahna Pastorini in the championship match.
Feldman said that she used a more aggressive approach this time.
“I’ve been working on a serve-and-volley game for the last six months,” she said. “I was having trouble getting my first serve over in the first set, so it was hard for me to go to the net. When I did go, it seemed to work out.”
With two years’ eligibility left, Segura was already planning next year’s campaign after her loss.
“I just wasn’t executing today,” she said. “I took some time off because of a back injury, and my mechanics weren’t there. This won’t happen again. I’ll be ready next time.”
In the doubles final, seniors Christina Banania and Jessica Quileza of Carson defeated Brenda Moore and Carolyn Lee of Palisades, 7-5, 6-4, to repeat as champions.
