Moreno Valley Canyon Springs High scored four first-half touchdowns en route to a 48-0 victory over Norco Friday night in the Southern Section Division IV football championship game before an estimated 4,000 at Mt. San Antonio College.

Senior quarterback Ryan Roques completed five of seven passes for 113 yards, including a 53-yard scoring play to Charles Watkins on the final play of the first half, giving Canyon Springs (13-1) a 28-0 lead.

Roques also rushed for 63 yards and a five-yard touchdown, as Canyon Springs, ranked No. 6 by The Times, made amends after losing to Irvine, 41-14, in last year’s Division IV final.

“The kids came ready to play tonight,” Canyon Springs Coach Jack Fogarty said. “We played bad in last year’s finals, and all the kids cared about tonight was winning that title.”

Canyon Springs, which had five players run for touchdowns, outgained Norco, 392 yards to 92. Norco finished 11-3.

Norco quarterback Andrew Whieldon completed only two of 15 passes for 50 yards. He was sacked seven times.

“We stopped their running game and forced them to pass,” Fogarty said. “We knew if that happened, we’d get to the quarterback.”

Terrelle Smith, who rushed for 61 yards and two touchdowns, finished off an 80-yard drive with a seven-yard run, giving Canyon Springs a 7-0 lead.

Roques made it 14-0 in the first quarter when he scored from five yards out.

Darrell Franklin gave Canyon Springs a 21-0 lead with a one-yard run in the second quarter.
