MATER DEI--Can the Monarchs win back-to-back emotional games? Last week, they topped Los Alamitos, Orange County’s top-ranked team. This week it’s former Angelus League nemesis Bishop Amat, ranked No. 1 in the nation by some national polls. The Monarchs have lost eight of the last nine games the teams have played. But this is one of Mater Dei’s best teams in decades, maybe better than the 1991 team that won the Division I title. The offensive line is huge and skilled. Running backs Steve Bodnar (1,723 yards, 26 TDs) and Joey Trampush (778 yards, 10 TDs) and quarterback John Flynn (2,546 yards, 26 TDs) give the Monarchs a balanced attack. Wide receiver Rod Perry is dangerous any time he has the football. Defense is the key. Mater Dei did an adequate job of containing Los Alamitos’ spread offense, but can their front line deal with physical Bishop Amat?
BISHOP AMAT--There’s no secret to the Lancers’ success--running back Daylon McCutcheon. He has 2,265 yards rushing and has scored 31 touchdowns. Quarterback James Free isn’t much of a threat, but he doesn’t have to be. The offensive line isn’t overly big, but it is effective and McCutcheon doesn’t need much of a hole. As he goes, so goes the Lancer offense and it usually goes. McCutcheon gets most of the attention, but the Lancers win games with their defense, which is led by linebacker Kory Minor and nose tackle Glen Ili. Minor has 20 1/2 sacks. Nose tackle Tom Gurrola has 9 1/2 sacks. McCutcheon is there on defense, too. He has intercepted eight passes, two of which he has returned for touchdowns. The Lancers have three shutouts and have held six other teams to seven points or fewer. That includes a 34-3 rout of Bakersfield, which was ranked third in the state at the time, in Bakersfield.
KEY TO THE GAME--Mater Dei’s offensive line vs. Bishop Amat’s defensive front. If the Monarchs can run, they can win. It will allow them to hang onto the ball and keep it away from McCutcheon, who is good for one breakaway each week.
CONSENSUS--Mater Dei by a field goal.
