PREP CROSS-COUNTRY / ORANGE COUNTY ALL-STAR GAME : North Rallies With 7 Goals to Win, 13-11

The North squad rallied with seven fourth-quarter goals for a 13-11 victory over the South in the ninth Orange County All-Star water polo game Saturday at Tustin High.

The victory ended a three-game winning streak by the South and was the North’s fourth victory in nine years.

Trailing, 9-5, after three quarters, the North scored six consecutive goals and held the South scoreless for the final 5 minutes 15 seconds.

Saddleback’s Bret Trezise scored three goals, all in the fourth quarter, to help lead the comeback.

The South dominated the first three quarters. San Clemente’s John Hewko, El Toro’s Alan Basso and Corona del Mar’s Adam McFarland each scored in the opening quarter, giving the South a 3-1 lead. The lead grew to 7-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Corona del Mar’s Thad Buzolich and Hewko beat North goalie Conor Mann of Canyon and Servite’s Brian Heifferon and Canyon’s Jeff Hamilton answered with shots that beat South goalie Doug Jetton of Corona del Mar.

In the fourth quarter, Jetton was beaten by Trezise, Heifferon and Esperanza’s Jason Mericle to tie the score, 11-11. The North took its first lead of the game on a goal by Buena Park’s Jason Pike with 2:15 left to play. Trezise’s third goal put the game out of reach with 24 seconds remaining.

Hewko led the South with three goals and Mission Viejo’s Brandon Huie had two.

Heifferon had three goals and Esperanza’s Mike Stanley had two for the North.
