Montclair Prep forced seven turnovers and scored 34 consecutive second-half points to romp past Orange Lutheran, 53-13, and claim the Southern Section Division X championship Saturday in front of about 1,500 at Los Angeles Valley College.

The Mountie defense picked off three of Lancer quarterback Joe Juliano’s passes and recovered four of five Orange Lutheran fumbles. Two of those fumble recoveries came in the third quarter on kickoff returns, when Montclair Prep scored three touchdowns to blow open a close game. The Mounties’ 53 points was a season-high; two weeks ago they scored 50 against Big Bear.

It was Montclair Prep’s (11-1) second Southern Section title in three years; they were the Division IX champs in 1992.

Mounties quarterback Darrel Dent rushed for 251 yards in eight carries and scored three times, and passed for 106 yards and a touchdown.

Tailback Akil Anderson had 115 yards in 29 carries and two touchdowns.

“All we’ve been hearing is we don’t belong in this division,” Mounties Coach George Gianinni said, referring to the fact Montclair Prep belongs to no league and was an at large selection by the section. “But until they started fumbling it was anybody’s ball game. They did an excellent job preparing for us; they exploited our weaknesses on defense, and took away our basic game plan. They just couldn’t stop Darrel.”

“It became a motivating factor,” said Dent, nephew of San Francisco 49ers’ Richard Dent. “We didn’t care what division they put us in, we just wanted to dominate it.”

Juliano tried to keep up with his counterpart, passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns. But he lost two of the fumbles, as did running back Che Holloway on the kickoff returns.

“I’m very proud of the kids,” Lancers Coach Jim Kunau said. “Darrel made huge plays and when you make six turnovers you’re not going to beat a great team. But it’s still been a season to remember.”

Both coaches said before the game that stopping the other quarterback would be the key to winning. “We must pressure Juliano and contain him,” Gianinni said. “We can’t let him escape. If we can stop him, we can win the game.”

The Mounties’ strategy worked. Montclair Prep took immediate control, with 13 first-quarter points. After recovering a Juliano fumble at the Lancer 47 on the game’s first play, Anderson scored on a one-yard dive. Then after stopping the Lancers outside the one-yard line on a fourth down run, the Mounties went 99 yards in three plays--91 on a naked bootleg sprint by Dent.

Orange Lutheran did not find a way to slow down Dent in the second quarter. The 6-1, 193-pound senior gained 196 yards on six carries in the half, including second touchdown run of eight yards.

Orange Lutheran scored 90 seconds into the second quarter, when Juliano completed a three-yard pass to Aaron Kenney. And with 1:16 left to play in the half, Juliano trimmed the margin to 19-13 with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Dan Young, who finished with eight receptions for 125 yards.
