BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Cypress Manages to Come Back in Time to Defeat Troy

Cypress trailed early but rallied to beat Troy, 53-48, Friday in a semifinal game of the Sonora boys’ basketball tournament at Sonora High.

Cypress outscored Troy, 15-3, in the third quarter lead, 39-32. Troy led, 18-11, after the first quarter. Brett Boulton scored 11 points to lead Cypress (8-1), which plays Sonora for the championship tonight at 8. Hampson scored 16 points for Troy (5-4).

In the other semifinal:

Sonora 50, Century 41--Sergio Hernandez had 13 points and Craig Clark had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Sonora (6-2) in the championship semifinals. Hector Beltran had 11 points for Century (6-2), which will play Troy for third place at 6 p.m.

In consolation-round game:

La Quinta 59, Western 53 (OT)--Greg Greenfield was the leading scorer for La Quinta (4-3) with 27 points in a consolation victory. Jason Gondringer added 15 points for the Aztecs.

Gilbert Issaian had 15 points for Western (4-5).

In semifinals of the Arroyo Grande Tournament:

Canyon 62, Fountain Valley 42--Fountain Valley came out strong in the first quarter, outscoring Canyon, 16-8. But the Comanches came back behind the scoring of Greg Minor, who had 26 points, and pulled ahead in the second quarter for good. Phil Domingo had 16 points for Fountain Valley.

In the Murrieta Valley Tournament:

San Clemente 77, Yucca Valley 47--Mike Castaneda scored 18 points and had eight assists for San Clemente (2-6). Gabe Gardner scored 16 points and had 11 rebounds for the Tritons.

In the Express League:

Heritage Christian 86, Bethel Baptist 44--Jay Williams had a career-high 49 points, Jim Findlater had 16 points and 14 rebounds and David Atchison had 15 points and 10 assists for visiting Heritage Christian (5-1, 2-0).

In nonleague games:

Katella 76, Magnolia 42--LaByron Clayton had 20 points and Jacy Armbruster had 17 for Katella, which remains unbeaten at 9-0. Hani Atalla had 14 points for Magnolia (6-4).

Loara 52, Orange Lutheran 50--Loara held off the Lancers after leading by 12 entering the fourth quarter. Tony Moss had 18 points and Neil Thomas 13 for the Saxons (5-4).

Los Amigos 49, Costa Mesa 41--Chris Francis had 13 points and seven rebounds and John Elsaesser had 12 points and seven rebounds as Los Amigos (3-4), who lead 43-16 after three quarters, held on for the victory.

Mission Viejo 46, Laguna Beach 45--Tyler Kalklosch (15 points) made two clutch free throws in the final minute to give Mission Viejo the lead and a victory.
