PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Clark Helps Sonora Pound Cypress

Craig Clark, tournament most valuable player, had 14 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots to lead the host Raiders to a 63-49 victory over Cypress in the championship game of the Sonora boys’ basketball tournament Saturday for the second consecutive year.

Sergio Hernandez and Chad Fister, who scored 13 and 11 points, were named to the all-tournament team for Sonora.

Sonora, which improved to 7-2, played as the visitor on its home floor and opened an eight-point lead to end the first quarter.

Cypress loss for the second time this year, moving its record to 7-2; Sonora improved to 7-2.

In the third-place game:

Troy 55, Century 43--Kris Green scored a game-high 15 points to lead Troy (6-4). Hector Beltran paced Century (6-3) with 13 points.

In the championship of the El Dorado boys’ Coed Classic:

El Dorado 55, Downey 47--Dustin Miller scored 14 points and Dan Simonsen had 11 for tournament host El Dorado (8-2).

In the fifth-place game:

Pomona Ganesha 62, Sunny Hills 47--Ben Nicolas scored 16 points for Sunny Hills (4-5) in the fifth-place game.

Kevin Colbert led Ganesha (3-6) with 16 points.

In the third-place game of the Arroyo Grande Tournament:

Fountain Valley 62, Paso Robles 39--Daniel Keller scored 18 points, 13 in the first quarter, and had seven rebounds for Fountain Valley (5-4).

In the third-place game of the El Dorado girls’ Coed Classic:

El Dorado 49, Corona 23--Heather Cunningham scored 14 points for El Dorado. Shanna Renken also had 10 points for host El Dorado (5-1).

In the fifth-place game:

Canyon 64, Valencia 49--Dawn Brown scored 16 points and Stacey Fish scored 14 for Canyon. Jamie Snavely was Valencia’s top scorer with 17 points.

In the championship of the Orange Lutheran Tournament:

Whittier Christian 62, Orange Lutheran 38--Alana Kempton scored 20 points to lead Whittier Christian (7-2) in the championship final. Kempton was eight of eight from the free-throw line and was selected tournament MVP.

Kim Menke also had 17 points for the Heralds.

Amy Howard was the top scorer for tournament host Orange Lutheran (5-2) with 14 points. Lori Wright added seven points for the Lancers.

In the third-place game:

Century 47, Woodcrest Christian 31--Nina Alexander scored 16 points to lead Century. Shannon Hanks led Woodcrest Christian with 13 points.
