Chris Sailer of Notre Dame High, who kicked a state-record 22 field goals this season and tied the career mark of 33, was named Wednesday to the All-USA football team selected by USA Today.

Sailer, one of the most-recruited kickers in the nation, this season connected on seven field goals of at least 50 yards, including a career-best 58-yarder against St. Francis.

Sailer’s leg played an integral role in Notre Dame’s drive to the Southern Section Division III championship. He made all 39 of his extra points and averaged 44.1 yards a punt.

“I got the phone call this morning and I was really shocked,” Sailer said. “It was really surprising to see me on the team along with everybody else that was on there. It’s a big honor.”

Sailer, 5 feet 10 and 175 pounds, plans to make recruiting visits to Stanford, Cal, UCLA and Colorado State.

Then again, he may never tee it up in college.

A three-year starting midfielder for Notre Dame, he also is being recruited to play soccer. Days after the Knights’ 27-20 championship victory over Ayala, Sailer scored twice against Bell Gardens in his first match this season.

He has attracted the interest of UCLA and Stanford.

“Both my parents are from Germany, and soccer has always been my love,” Sailer said. “I’m not saying I’m leaning toward anything because I’m still looking at both (sports).”
