SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Marshall High didn’t win the Washington or Bell tournaments, but the experience helped the Barristers defeat San Pedro, 62-33, in the San Fernando tournament final Wednesday at San Fernando High.

“It was a wake-up call,” senior guard Jamie Kogan said. “It made us a better team.”

Marshall opened the season by splitting four games in the Washington tournament, and then lost two of three games in the Bell tournament the previous week.

“It was a humbling experience, but they came to the reality there are other good teams out there,” Marshall Coach Wendy Triplett said. “And when we’re playing in the playoffs in the first round, that could make the difference down the stretch.”

There was little drama against San Pedro.

Paced by 16 first-half points from Kogan, the Barristers raced to a 29-13 second-quarter lead. Marshall, which led at halftime, 35-17, opened the second half with a 9-0 run and built a 50-22 advantage with two minutes left in the third quarter.

Kogan finished with a game-high 19 points. She also had seven rebounds and seven assists. Teammates Korey Kobata added 12 points and seven assists and Eva Rodriguez scored eight.

Kogan, who had 21 and 20 points in a 63-18 first-round victory over Cleveland and a 37-21 semifinal win against Hamilton, was selected to the all-tournament team along with Kobata and Rodriguez for Marshall.

“We thought we had a good chance to win the tournament, but we didn’t go in thinking we were going to win it all,” Kobata said. “We’re starting to get to know each other and playing better together.”
