STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT / BOYS’ ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Overcomes a Slowdown by Fairfax, 41-28

Shaun Jackson took what had been up for grabs Thursday and put Santa Ana Mater Dei in the Southern California Division I Regional boys’ basketball finals.

Jackson scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, as the Monarchs outlasted a deliberate Fairfax team, 41-28, in a second-round game at Cal State Fullerton. The Monarchs (34-1) will play Clovis West at The Pond of Anaheim on Saturday.

Fairfax (24-7) kept close by slowing the tempo. The Lions led, 20-18, midway through the third quarter and were down only 27-22 when Jackson took over.

He scored the Monarchs’ next 12 points to give them a 39-25 lead.

Mater Dei’s Schea Cotton, who has averaged 25 points during the playoffs, was two for six from the field and finished with 10 points.

Compton Dominguez 88, Pasadena 55--James Brown scored 21 points and Jason Thomas scored 20 to lead the Dons (31-2) to a Division II victory over the Bulldogs (25-7) at Dominguez.

Studio City Harvard-Westlake 74, Tulare Western 53--Jason Collins made all 10 shots and scored 20 points to lead the Wolverines (29-2) to a Division III victory over Western (24-5) at Harvard-Westlake.

Collins, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center, also had a game-high 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. He scored 12 of the Wolverines first 16 points to spark Harvard-Westlake to an 18-0 lead.

Harvard-Westlake held Western scoreless for the first 7:15 and led, 20-2, after one quarter.

Lakewood Artesia 55, San Diego University 54--With the score tied and five seconds left in overtime, Deandre Moore missed his first free throw but made his second to lift the Pioneers (28-3) over the Dons (20-10) in a Division III semifinal at Artesia.

Van Nuys Montclair Prep 63, Pasadena Poly 30--After losing to the Panthers by six points six days ago in the Southern Section Division V final, the Mounties (26-5) had little trouble getting by Pasadena Poly (27-3).

Anwan Jones led Montclair Prep with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Reed Berglund scored 11 points and had 11 assists.
