CSUN Sweeps Again in Softball

Scia Maumausolo and Jennifer Parker each had four hits as visiting Cal State Northridge swept Colorado State, 6-3 and 5-0, in a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Saturday.

Maumausolo, who drove in five runs in a sweep of New Mexico on Friday, had two hits and a run-scoring double in the first game. Parker had two hits and scored a run.

Christina Baioa added three hits and two RBIs for seventh-ranked Northridge (26-9, 9-1 in conference play).

Jennifer Richardson (7-3) gave up six hits and struck out four for the Matadors in the opener and Kathy Blake-Small pitched a one-hitter and struck out seven in the second game.

Blake-Small (12-4) did not walk a batter while facing only one batter over the minimum. Amy ReCouper singled in the second for Colorado State’s only hit.

Kelly Toovey had two hits and two RBIs for Northridge in the second game.

Colorado State is 13-14 and 2-10 in conference play.

BASEBALL

Cal Lutheran 4-5, UC San Diego 1-4--The Kingsmen swept the nonconference doubleheader at UC San Diego, avenging a loss in the best-of-five NCAA Division III West Regional playoffs last spring.

UC San Diego was ranked ninth, Cal Lutheran 24th in the last Division III poll. Cal Lutheran (15-7) has won 15 of 17 games since an 0-5 start.

During that run Cal Lutheran has also defeated No. 2 Eastern Connecticut State. A new poll will be released Monday.

Canyons 5, Oxnard 4--Joe Chutuk’s sacrifice fly scored John Franklin in the bottom of the eighth in a Western State Conference interdivision game at Canyons.

Bobby Cowan (5-2) gave up three runs in the first inning for the Cougars (13-15, 8-5), but only an unearned run before being relieved in the ninth.

Brian Shaw hit his third home run, with nobody one in the fourth, for Canyons.

Santa Barbara City 4, Valley 1--Juan Dorado had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings, then Santa Barbara scored four runs in the WSC interdivision game at Valley.

Brandon Mora had two hits and John Shellabarger drove in the only run for Valley (7-16-2, 4-8-1).

Dorado (2-2) struck out four and was removed in the sixth inning.

Chaffey 12, Antelope Valley 6--Eric Cole had two home runs and five RBIs, but it wasn’t enough for the Marauders (12-12-1, 7-8) in a Foothill Conference game at Antelope Valley.

Cole hit his seventh home run in the fifth inning to pull the Marauders to within 6-5, but Chaffey (16-6, 12-3) scored three runs in the top of the sixth.

Antelope Valley starter Jesse Perez (3-2) gave up two home runs before departing in the sixth.

CS Dominguez Hills 6, The Master’s 0--Paul Gutierrez struck out two and gave up four hits in seven innings for the Toros (18-13-1) in a nonconference game at Dominguez Hills.

Dave Sauerheber scored on a sacrifice fly and Al McGuire scored on a wild pitch to break open a close game in the fifth.

Paul Gomez (1-3) struck out one and walked seven in 5 1/3 innings for Master’s (12-13).

Moorpark 7, Mission 4--Alex Alvarenga hit a three-run triple in the top of the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie as the Raiders (18-9, 8-5) beat the Free Spirit in a WSC game at Mission.
