Southern Section Honors Teams for High Academic Achievement

Ocean View had the top academic badminton team and Huntington Beach the top field hockey squad as the Southern Section’s 1995 team academic award winners were announced this week.

The section’s top academic team this year was the La Verne Calvary Baptist girls’ volleyball squad, which had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.92. Ocean View’s badminton team had a 3.85 GPA and the Huntington Beach field hockey team had a 3.09 GPA.

Awards will be presented to the top teams in a ceremony before the Angels-Oakland baseball game at 7:35 p.m. May 3 at Anaheim Stadium.

Many of the area’s top track and field athletes will compete this week in the 37th Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

High school competition begins at 8 a.m. Friday and concludes at 7:30 p.m. Dana Hills sophomore Bryan Harrison will race in the 100- and 200-meter events. Harrison has the county’s top times in both events (10.70 and 21.64 seconds).

Edison, Foothill, Huntington Beach, Trabuco Hills and Tustin are among the county teams scheduled to participate.

The three-day meet begins today with the community college division and concludes Saturday with the open and invitational competition.
