HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP : Westlake Last One Standing Again in Durango Shootout

Westlake High defeated Las Vegas Western, 3-2, in the championship game of the Durango tournament on Wednesday at Las Vegas, defending the title the Warriors won last spring.

The Warriors (13-3) beat Mira Mesa, 9-6, in a semifinal game earlier in the day.

Westlake’s Brian Schuster had two hits, including a run-scoring double in a three-run third inning. Junior right-hander Steve Udell pitched two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory against Western (14-3).

Schuster had two hits and Matt Riordan had three against Mira Mesa. Jay Kenny picked up the victory in relief. Kenny threw 100 pitches, appearing in both games.

COACHELLA

Edison 10, Saugus 5--The Centurions (10-7) lost the championship game in Palm Springs after beating Channel Islands, 14-0, earlier in the day.

SANTA BARBARA

Rio Mesa 13, Royal 3--Marcus Yasutake had four hits and two RBIs for the Spartans (10-4) in pool play at Santa Barbara High.

Charlie Boch had three hits and three RBIs for Rio Mesa.

Kevin Mellinger had two hits for Royal (10-6), which used eight pitchers.

BIRMINGHAM

Granada Hills 12, University 7--Jim Landress had a double and a home run, driving in three runs, for the Highlanders (10-6).

Adrian Torres had three singles and scored two runs for Granada Hills. Josh Goldberg (5-2) picked up the victory in relief.

San Fernando 8, Palisades 2--Danny Rios had two hits and drove in four runs for the Tigers.

Julian Puentes went the distance, giving up nine hits and a walk for San Fernando (9-8).

Montclair Prep 8, Hawthorne 2--Brian Targon held Hawthorne to two hits over the final five innings for the Mounties.

Targon, who made his first appearance of the season, struck out three and walked three.

Joe Cohen had three hits and drove in two runs for Montclair Prep (10-4).

BABE HERMAN

Crescenta Valley 12, Lynwood 0--Jason Griffiths had three hits and two RBIs for the Falcons (11-3) in the consolation championship at Stengel Field.

Upland 5, Burroughs 3--The Indians (5-11-1) rallied for three runs but left the tying run on third as the Highlanders took third place.

Hoover 4, St. Francis 1--The Knights (9-7) had the bases full with one out in the third but a double play ended the threat and the Tornadoes took control with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

VENTURA

Ventura 5, Buena 3--Marcos Tovar’s three-run home run in the third inning was the difference as the Cougars (12-4) beat the Bulldogs (9-7) in a pool-play game.

Ventura starter Seth Casey (2-0), academically ineligible until last week, went five innings to earn the victory.

Buena, Ventura and Camarillo all finished the four-round tournament with 3-1 records. The Bulldogs were declared champions on total runs.

Santa Paula 3, Newbury Park 2--The Cardinals (8-5) scored three runs in the sixth inning to win a pool play game.

Rocky Frutos led off with a solo home run, Daniel Forhan doubled, and Paz Olson-Pacheco tripled and scored on a passed ball.

Frutos (2-1) struck out two and walked two, scattering seven hits, while Dustin Tubb struck out 10 and walked one for the Panthers.

SANTA YNEZ

St. Joseph 8, Village Christian 2--Mike Gallegos had two hits and drove in two runs for the Crusaders (12-2) in a pool play loss.

Mike Santiago (2-1) gave up a three-run home run in the first.

RANCHO CORDOVA

Hart 7, El Camino 4--Jeremy Seipel had two hits as the Indians beat El Camino, which managed five hits against three Hart pitchers in pool play at Sacramento.

Hart had 13 hits.

Hart 3, Oakmont 1--Ron Jones allowed two hits in six innings and Mike Haynes had two hits for the Indians.

Hart (9-7) won for the ninth time in 10 games.
