COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Cypress Rallies for Victory Over Golden West in Softball

Cypress fell behind early but rallied for a 2-1 victory over Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference softball game Friday at Golden West.

Golden West (6-24-1, 3-14) scored in the second but Cypress (40-7, 15-2) got single runs in the third and fifth to remain in a first-place tie with Rancho Santiago with four games left.

Jenn Allchin scored the winning run when she scored on a fielder’s choice on a grounder by Briana Yoshina. Allchin had two hits.

Christa Saindon tied the score with a sacrifice fly to score Rockie Breig in the third.

Debbie Goddu (14-2) gave up only three hits, retiring the last 11 batters she faced for Cypress.

In other conference softball games:

Fullerton 14, Irvine Valley 2 (5, mercy)--Stephanie Mendoza had a double and a single and scored two runs and teammate Traci Vargas also had a double for third-place Fullerton (22-10, 12-5).

Orange Coast 8, Saddleback 5--Molly Sinclair was three for three with one walk, two runs scored one RBI to lead Orange Coast (11-19, 7-10). Christy Journell and Stacy Lumey each were three for four for Saddleback (20-12, 8-9).

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 1--Golden West clinched a berth in the Southern California Regionals with a 9-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-11 victory. Golden West (13-5, 11-5) and Orange Coast will play for second place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Golden West.

Orange Coast 3, Grossmont 1--Jason Crone had 24 kills and Colin Bemus had 57 assists for Orange Coast (14-7, 10-6), which defeated Grossmont, 15-8, 11-15, 15-9, 15-8, and moved ahead of the Griffins for third place in the conference. Phillip Schildts had 15 kills and Brad Callahan had 14 kills for the Pirates.

Palomar 3, Irvine Valley 0--Palomar clinched the conference title with a 15-3, 15-3, 15-6 victory.
