PREPS

Several baseball teams in the San Gabriel Valley have either clinched their league championships or on the verge of doing so.

Bishop Amat, which began the week 17-3, is leading the Del Rey League, Arcadia (17-3) is leading the Pacific League, South Hills (18-1) is unbeaten in the Valle Vista League and Glendora (17-4) is No. 1 in the Baseline League.

* Donte Quinine of Rowland and Seneca Moore of Wilson were named co-most valuable players after leading the South all-stars to a 111-101 victory over the North in the San Gabriel Valley All-Star Basketball Classic.

Moore scored 35 points and Quinine 26.

Jamie Gast of Diamond Bar scored 30 points to lead the East to an 89-85 victory over the West in the girls’ all-star game.

More than 60 players from 76 high schools participated in the tournament.

* Several schools from the San Gabriel Valley are among those ranked in the Southern Section baseball, softball and boys’ tennis polls.

In baseball, Bishop is ranked fourth in Division I. South Hills is third and Glendora fifth in Division II.

Walnut is No. 10 in Division III. San Marino is second, Sierra Vista fourth, Temple City fifth, Arroyo ninth and Gladstone 10th in Division IV. Maranatha is sixth and Pasadena Poly ninth in Division V.

In softball, St. Lucy’s is third and South Hills 10th in Division III. Pasadena Poly is eighth in Division V.

Diamond Bar is sixth in Division I in boys’ tennis. San Marino is fourth in Division II, Pasadena Poly is fourth and Keppel ninth in Division III. Sierra Vista is third, Bonita fourth and La Puente ninth in Division IV.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

Pasadena City College’s Jena Betrue, Annie Lim, Pollyanna Kwok and Claudio Hoyos qualified for the Southern California regional tennis tournament that will take place Friday and Saturday at College of the Desert.

Betrue and Lim qualified in women’s doubles and Kwok in singles. Hoyos qualified in men’s singles.

* The Mt. San Antonio College men’s track team won the South Coast Conference championship last weekend at Long Beach in a meet that saw many local athletes qualify for the Southern California Community College prelims Saturday at Cerritos College.

Mt. SAC, which won its first title since 1985, was led by winning performances by Saki Middleton in the 100 meters, Jason McGinnis (high jump), Tati White (discus) and Walter Cheeks (javelin).

Michelle Bryant of Mt. SAC won the women’s discus. Sarah Goodlaw of Pasadena City College won the shotput and the javelin, and PCC’s Gene Shepard won the men’s 400.

COLLEGES

As expected, Azusa Pacific’s track teams won Golden State Athletic Conference championships with meet-record performances last weekend in San Diego.

The Azusa Pacific men’s team scored 321 points to win its ninth consecutive conference championship. Westmont was second with 111 points. The Cougar women won a conference title for the seventh time in nine years with 215 points. Westmont was second with 122.

* Cal Poly Pomona plays host to the Poly Invitational track meet on Saturday at Kellog Field.

The meet features many area universities and unattached performers. Field events begin at 11 a.m.

* Cal Poly Pomona will play host to the NCAA Division II West Regional men’s tennis tournament Friday and Saturday.

Cal State Los Angeles plays UC Riverside on Friday. The winner advances to play Pomona on Saturday for the right to advance to the NCAA championships May 11-14.

Pomona’s women play at Cal State L.A. to determine who will advance to the NCAA championships.

* Cal Poly Pomona’s baseball team travels to Cal State Los Angeles tonight, then plays host to the Golden Eagles in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader on Saturday.

Pomona entered the week 28-24 and 13-10 in the CCAA. The Broncos are in second place in the CCAA, 3 1/2 games behind UC Riverside. Pomona, which concludes its conference schedule next week against third-place Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills, must finish at least in second place to be considered for an at-large berth in the NCAA Division playoffs.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Jaime Gast, Diamond Bar--Gast, a senior guard, scored 30 points to lead the East to an 89-85 victory over the West in the San Gabriel Valley All-Star Classic basketball all-star game.

Gast is a two-time Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley player who was named All-State and All-Southern Section this past season.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Sarah Goodlaw, Pasadena City College--Goodlaw won the shotput and the discus at the South Coast Conference track and field championships and qualified for the Southern California Community College prelims that will be run Saturday at Cerritos College.

MISCELLANY

Barry Walraven, 59, of Monrovia, won a singles title and combined with Ron Skaggs of Upland to win a doubles gold medal in the Crown Valley Senior Games tennis competition last weekend in South Pasadena. Jim Bell of San Gabriel, 80, won the 140-pound wrestling championship and Pete Clentzos of Pasadena, 85, won a gold medal in golf in the 80-89 age bracket. * The city of Pasadena is seeking volunteers to teach basketball and assist with track and adaptive recreation activities. Information: (818) 797-1114.

* The 29th annual Mt. Wilson Trail Run will be staged May 27, beginning in Sierra Madre. The 8.6-mile race features an elevation gain of almost 2,100 feet. Entry is limited to 300 competitors. Information: (818) 355-2355.

CALENDAR

Azusa Pacific University will play host to a grass volleyball tournament on May 13.

Competition will be staged in men’s A and B doubles and women’s A doubles.

* A benefit golf tournament sponsored by Casa de las Amigas in Pasadena is scheduled for May 16 at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena.

Tournament entry of $95 includes green fees, cart and Mexican buffet dinner. Proceeds benefit Casa de la Amigas, a home for recovering women’s alcoholics.

* The city of La Verne will play host to a Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation men’s C and D slow-pitch softball tournament on May 13.

* A 5-K run/walk sponsored by the GeoSpace Academy at Muir High will be staged at 8 a.m. May 13 at the Rose Bowl. The race is sanctioned by U.S. Track and Field.
