Cornerstone Christian High got a boost from unlikely sources in an 8-1 victory over Boron in the semifinals of the Southern Section Division VI softball playoffs Tuesday. Freshman Jennifer Hughes, the Eagles’ No. 9 hitter, had three hits and drove in three runs.

Freshman Tyler Bruno doubled and scored three times as the Eagles (21-0-1) advanced to Saturday’s final against Linfield at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. Pitcher Karen Breshears (12-0) pitched a five hitter.

Cerritos Valley Chr. 2, Fillmore 0--The Flashes (17-6) were victimized by four errors and could manage only one hit, a one-out single by Esther Gurrola, in the seventh inning. Fillmore had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but the game ended with Danielle Stines and Nicole Ortiz, the fourth and fifth hitters, striking out.

Track

Kristin Dunn of Cal State Northridge will be shooting for her second consecutive top-three finish in the women’s javelin when the NCAA Division I track and field championships start today at the University of Tennessee.

Dunn, third in last year’s meet, raised the Northridge record to 176 feet 4 inches in April, but strained a knee in practice two weeks ago.

“If she’s healthy, I think she can finish in the top three,” Northridge Coach Don Strametz said. “The question is whether she’s healthy.”

Dunn will throw today and teammate Kristina Mataafa will compete in the discus Saturday.

Mataafa, a junior transfer from Colorado, ranks second on the all-time Northridge list with a best of 167-1.

Volleyball

Sylmar High’s Melvyn Lemus and Edward Terry and Van Nuys’ Ricardo Hernandez and Dickie Santiago were named to the All-City 3-A first team.
