HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL / SOUTHERN SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS : Marina Repeats as Division I Champion, 3-0
Huntington Beach Marina High pitcher Marcy Crouch competed her prep career by tossing a four-hit shutout in leading the Vikings to a 3-0 victory over Santa Ana Mater Dei in the Southern Section Division I championship Saturday at Mayfair Park in Lakewood.
Fourth-seeded Marina (24-5) became the first team to defend the major title since Santa Maria Righetti in 1982. The third-seeded Monarchs finished 27-5.
Crouch struck out seven and did not walk a batter to improve to 22-4. Her earned-run average before the game was 0.11.
The Vikings scored three runs in the second inning. After a single, walk and an error, Angela Burke drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Faith Fuata then scored on a wild pitch.
Right fielder Angela Alvarez completed the scoring with a run-scoring single off Mater Dei’s Colleen Boddy (26-5).
Crouch will attend Stanford in the fall.
Upland 4, Whittier La Serna 2--Sarah Farnworth (19-5) gave up four hits and two unearned runs and her cousin, Stacey Farnworth, hit a two-run double, helping the Highlanders (19-8) win the Division III title over the Lancers (26-3-1).
Cerritos Valley Christian 1, Thousand Oaks La Reina 0--Susie Schoales pitched a no-hitter and retired the final 26 batters and Erin Fluck scored the game’s run on a two-base error in the top of the 10th, giving the Lady Crusaders (17-4) their second consecutive Division V title.
Schoales (17-4) struck out 11 and gave up only a second-inning walk. La Reina finished 24-6.
Temecula Linfield 9, Camarillo Cornerstone Christian 0--Janelle Gonzales pitched a two-hitter and struck out nine and the Lady Lions (24-1) scored six unearned runs to win their second consecutive Division VI title.
