Monroe High’s Wayne Nix, who recently signed with the Oakland Athletics for a $97,500 bonus, was named the City Section 4-A Division player of the year.

Nix, a 6-foot-6 right-hander who struck out 143 in 90 innings, led the area with an 11-2 record and a 0.39 earned-run average.

Pitchers joining Nix on the All-City 4-A team include junior Derek Morse (8-3) of Kennedy and sophomore Shaun Fishman (7-4) of El Camino Real. Morse pitched a four-hitter in the Golden Cougars’ 3-1 victory over Carson in the 4-A championship game at Dodger Stadium earlier this month.
