Six to Play at Oklahoma Baseball Event

Six local baseball players, including La Quinta pitcher Craig Jones, The Times Orange County player of the year, will participate at the Sunbelt High School All-Star Classic beginning Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla.

Other Orange County players on the California team are Katella pitcher Jason Stockstill, Mater Dei catcher Josh Townsend and La Quinta shortstop Craig Kuzmic. Myron Pines, a former coach at Santiago High, will help coach the team.

The California team has games Tuesday against Maryland and the Oklahoma Juniors, Wednesday against Oklahoma, Thursday against Texas and Georgia and Friday against the Texas Juniors and Florida. The championship games are Saturday.

Former La Quinta High baseball star Walter Dawkins, a member of USC team that lost to Cal State Fullerton in the final game of the College World Series, has signed with the Philadelphia Phillies. Dawkins, drafted in the 15th round by Philadelphia, was assigned to its Batavia team in the Class-A New York-Penn League.

Dawkins, an outfielder, batted .329 in 70 games for the Trojans, including nine home runs and 57 RBI.

The Angels’ free baseball clinic scheduled for today at Glover Stadium in Anaheim has been postponed because of poor field conditions. It has been rescheduled for Aug. 26 at Glover Stadium. Other clinics, featuring Angel players and coaches, are scheduled July 8 (at Flower Park in Santa Ana), July 22 (Sonora High) and Aug. 5 (Oaknoll Park in Cypress).

San Clemente will be one of three California high school football teams playing in the Shawn Akaina Classic at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Aug. 31. It’s the first time the Titons have played football abroad. The team will stay a week in Honolulu.

San Clemente will face Punahou High. Also making the trip are Newhall Hart, which plays St. Louis, and Fresno Clovis, which meets Kahuku.

Other county teams that have played in the classic include Capistrano Valley, Mater Dei, Tustin and Edison.
