Fullerton’s Moore Gains Semifinals in Junior Tennis

Fullerton’s Ryan Moore had no problem with Marcin Kosakowski of Downey, winning, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the Southern California Junior Sectionals on Friday at the Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.
Top-seeded Moore was the only county player to advance to the semifinals in boys’ 16 division.
In the boys’ 18 division quarterfinals, Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach upset seventh-seeded Nick Varvais of Simi Valley, 6-3, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Joseph Gilbert of Fullerton beat Bret Hankey of Huntington Beach, 6-2, 6-3.
No. 1-seeded Taylor Dent of Newport Beach advanced with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over fifth-seeded Phillip King of Long Beach.
Third-seeded Faye DeVera of Villa Park ousted Ilona Kordonskaya of Los Angeles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the girls’ 16 quarterfinals.
Brandi Freudenberg of Orange beat second-seeded Marisa Velasco of Chula Vista, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals in the 18 division. Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego eliminated Irvine’s Natalie Exon, 6-2, 6-2.

Ryan Bettencourt has been named girls’ basketball coach at Santa Margarita.
Bettencourt’s Pacifica team shared the Garden Grove League title last year with Garden Grove. He replaced Carol Smith.
Matt Murphy, who assisted Bettencourt at Pacifica, has become the Mariners’ head coach.

Monique Toney, a first-team all-Sunset League girls’ basketball player, has transferred to El Dorado High.
Toney, a point guard at Esperanza last year, enrolled Thursday. She will be one of three junior guards, joining Beau Bryant and Jamie Nebeker, who were first team all-Empire League players last year.
El Dorado ended the year ranked ninth in the county; Esperanza was ranked 10th.

The inaugural Women’s Summer Tournament of Champions will be July 14-16 at Century High.
The girls’ basketball tournament will feature Mater Dei, Southern Section Division I-A champions and runners-up for the State Division I title, and Ocean View and El Dorado, which reached the quarterfinals of the section II-AA and II-A divisions, respectively.
The championship game will be played 7 p.m. Sunday, July 16.
