Early Wins Platform Diving

Brian Early of the Mission Viejo Nadadores won the men’s platform competition and teammate Jeff Nichols was second at the Senior National Zone D preliminaries Sunday at the Mission Viejo Aquatics Center.

In the women’s platform competition, Kenesha Jespersen of the Nadadores finished second behind Kim Stanfield of the McCormick Divers in Long Beach.

The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Phillips 66 Senior National Outdoor Diving Championships next month in Bartlesville, Okla. Divers finishing among the top eight twice in four years at that event qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Aaron Waldrip of Villa Park High scored with 1 minute 52 seconds left to give the Orange Regional Competitive Aquatics 17-and-under club team a 5-4 victory over Loyola of Puerto Rico in the first round of the Junior Olympic Water Polo Championships in Orlando, Fla.

In an earlier contest, Jake French of Capistrano Valley scored three goals to lead ORCA to a 9-4 victory over Miami South Beach.

In the 15-and-under division, Matt Sakatani of El Toro High scored four goals as ORCA defeated St. Louis Daisy, 13-4.

In other first-round games, the Costa Mesa 17-and-under boys defeated Tualitin Hills, Ore., 16-4, and the Concord, Calif., Vikings, 17-4.

The Trabuco 13-and-under girls team won, 14-1, over Annapolis, Md., and the 17-and-under team defeated Atwater, Calif., 11-0, and the Nadadores of Puerto Rico, 11-1.

The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron overcame a penalty in the engagement area and defeated the Prince Alfred Yacht Club of Australia in the 29th annual Governor’s Cup off Newport Beach.

The Newport Harbor Yacht Club placed fourth in the four-day, 11-race event and the Balboa Yacht Club was 12th.
