OUTLOOK

On preseason questionnaires, every Golden West League coach picked the Friars to run away with the title. If nothing else, it proved these guys don’t need to be hit on the head twice. The Friars pummeled all league foes last season, helping to ignite a playoff run that ended in the Southern Section Division V championship game. The scary thing is they might be better this season. The Friars are big, deep and fast. Eight starters return on defense (27 lettermen overall), led by standout linebackers Paul and Salerno and punter Crosser, who was a Times Orange County first-team selection. Crosser averaged 44 net yards per kick, and opponents fumbled at least one punt in 13 of Servite’s 14 games. Hernandez is among the league’s best in the secondary. Servite has an imposing nonleague schedule, opening play today in Chicago against De La Salle.
