OUTLOOK

The Mustangs reached the Southern Section Division I semifinals, where they lost to La Puente Bishop Amat. But there have been big changes since. Gone is Jim Barnett, the school’s first coach, and in is former Mission Viejo High coach Crow, Barnett’s long-time assistant. More drastic a change is the offensive philosophy. The Mustangs have long been known for their pass-happy style, but this year they will run more option plays and make considerable use of the wishbone formation. That makes Byrne, a fullback, and Triman, a tight end, key players. The secondary is solid, with Carter, a first-team all-league selection, and Kilby, a second-team pick, back. But Mertins, a first-team all-league selection, is the only starter back on the offensive line. Voltin and Wight did get some experience. Parker, a second-team, all-league pick, is the only returning starter on the defensive line.
