PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / FOOTHILL LEAGUE : SOUTHERN SECTION

Share

FACTS AND FIGURES: Nobody in this league has been or likely will be more ballyhooed than Hart running back Ted Iacenda. After only one week of fall camp, the 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior had been offered scholarships from six colleges. In two varsity seasons, Iacenda has rushed for 2,188 yards and caught 87 passes for 1,308 yards. Most impressive, he has 61 touchdowns. . . . Hart quarterback Steve McKeon completed 61% of his passes for 2,925 yards and 30 touchdowns. . . . Saugus has 14 starters returning and 71 players on the varsity roster. . . . Canyon has said goodby to All-American tackle Mark Manskar (USC), who last season helped the Cowboys gain 300 yards rushing against Hart. The line won’t be as strong, but will be more balanced. . . . Led by 240-pound O’Brien Reynoso, the Burbank offensive line is big and smart. The line, including both tight ends, has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.4. Reynoso, has a 3.9 GPA and bench-presses 405 pounds. . . . Kevin McLaughlin of Hart made 65 of 68 extra points, but attempted only two field goals last season, making one. . . . Canyon quarterback Ahjeron Palmer (628 yards rushing, 552 passing) broke off several big runs last year and has become more of a passing threat. . . . Monte McKeon rushed for more than 1,400 yards on the Canyon junior varsity team.

LAST YEAR: Burbank, one week after a last-second, 15-14 loss to Verbum Dei, gave Hart a scare in a 20-7 defeat. The Bulldogs led, 7-6, in the third quarter. . . . Saugus defensive backs Brandon Alvarado and Colin Butterfield returned five interceptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns. . . . While Iacenda and McKeon scored most of the touchdowns and grabbed all the headlines, Hart’s J.B. Nelson had 10 touchdowns--six receiving, two rushing and two on kick returns. . . . The stingiest defense in the league didn’t belong to Hart. Saugus allowed only 144.8 yards per game. Hart (319.7) finished fourth in that category. . . . With the defense riddled by injuries, Saugus’ Mark Pecaro started at linebacker and recorded a school-record 18 solo tackles against Bell-Jeff.

KEY RETURNERS: Hart: Marc Zimmerman, linebacker; Todd Renfro, cornerback. Saugus: Jeremy Mushinsky, running back; Kevin Carrasco, quarterback. Burroughs: Mike Barrett, running back.

OUTLOOK: Canyon is still going through a transition period, but Coach Larry Mohr believes as many as five of his players have all-league potential. . . . Burbank expects to reach the playoffs with sophomore running back Juni Williams leading a nucleus of inexperienced but talented players. . . . Burroughs’ playoff hopes depend, in part, on newcomer J.K. Scott’s effectiveness at quarterback. . . . Saugus might be the only team that can keep Hart from repeating as champion.
