PREP FOOTBALL ’95 / MARMONTE LEAGUE : SOUTHERN SECTION

Share

FACTS AND FIGURES: Explosive offensive attacks should make Westlake and Newbury Park entertaining teams to watch. Westlake quarterback Steve Aylsworth is inexperienced at the position but he is a savvy player, having intercepted nine passes as a defensive back last season. Running back Jamal Harris (747 yards rushing) averaged 9.2 yards a carry and 25 yards per reception last year. Receiver Jason Victor, who scored 12 touchdowns last year, might be the best at his position in the area. . . . Behind junior quarterback Chris Czernek (1,383 yards passing) and a group of fine receivers, Newbury Park should once again be among the top passing teams in the Southern Section. . . . Thousand Oaks, under new Coach Mike Kelly, should have a balanced attack. Junior quarterback Scott McEwan (720 yards passing) is dramatically improved and senior three-year running back Brandon Jackson (840 yards rushing) is in top physical shape. . . . Christian Broussard and Damian Stitt give Royal a pair of dangerous running backs, but the passing game and defense are suspect. . . . Simi Valley has speedy receivers, but the quarterback position is unsettled. . . . Channel Islands has more size than in recent years, led by Division I prospects Blane Saipaia and Jose Murillo. . . . Transfers Tonjy Dejesus, a junior running back, and Jatoys Cormeir, a junior receiver, could complement quarterback Joe Borchard at Camarillo. . . . Agoura is going to the run-and-shoot behind left-handed sophomore quarterback Ryan McCann.

LAST YEAR: Westlake stormed through league play unbeaten, rolling up an average of 380 yards a game. Although the Warriors are favored to win again, they probably won’t get by unscathed. Royal finished second but could take a tumble. Newbury Park, coming off an unbeaten ’93 season, sneaked into the playoffs behind a high-powered passing attack. Agoura played well early and faded, while Thousand Oaks struggled early and finished strong. Simi Valley narrowly missed the playoffs despite fielding an inconsistent offense. Camarillo’s offense was fine but its defense deteriorated into one of the area’s worst. Channel Islands simply couldn’t move the ball, passing for only 32 yards a game.

OUTLOOK: Defending champion Westlake is favored by league coaches. Newbury Park, with an experienced quarterback and five fine receivers, should score enough points to make the playoffs and Thousand Oaks has the talent to contend for the title. Simi Valley has good speed, Camarillo has a bulky line, Channel Islands has a quick, aggressive defensive front, Royal has a handful of outstanding athletes, and Agoura has a strong junior class.
