PREP ROUNDUP : Villa Park’s Rout Gives Coach His 400th Water Polo Victory

Coach Jeff Ehrlich posted his 400th water polo victory with Villa Park as the Spartans beat Santa Monica, 16-1, Thursday in the first round of the Long Beach Millikan tournament.

Ehrlich, in his 22nd season, finished last season with 399 victories after El Toro eliminated Villa Park in the first round of the playoffs.

Kyle Baumgarner scored five goals for Villa Park (2-0). Brian Pharris scored five goals in a 16-2 second-round victory over Palos Verdes Peninsula.

In another Millikan tournament game:

Capistrano Valley 13, Estancia 9--Jake French scored six goals for Capistrano Valley (1-0). Eric Wayman scored five goals for Estancia (1-1) in a first-round game.

In nonleague boys’ cross-country:

Santa Margarita 30, Brea Olinda 42, Edison 49--Michael Murray finished first in 16:13, Dan Whittington third in 16:30 and Brandon vonGuenther fifth in 16:42 for sixth-ranked Santa Margarita (2-0) on its three-mile course.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Edison 3, Lakewood 0--Christie Webb had 10 kills and Kari Hogancamp 10 kills and 11 digs for Edison (2-0), which won, 15-5, 15-9, 15-3.

Huntington Beach 3, La Habra 0--Melissa Wendt had 20 kills as top-ranked Huntington Beach (2-0) swept No. 10 La Habra (1-1), 16-14, 15-8, 15-2. Allison Ciarelli had 42 assists for the Oilers.

Laguna Hills 3, Westminster 0--Tayyiba Haneef had seven kills and five blocks and Marissa Treinen five kills and three blocks for Laguna Hills (2-1), which won 15-7, 15-2, 15-2.

San Clemente 3, Long Beach Millikan 1--Lauren Netherby had nine kills and four aces for eighth-ranked San Clemente (2-1), which won 15-2, 15-8, 16-18, 15-1.

Santa Ana Valley 3, Santa Ana 1--Rhonda Bell had 14 kills and Angie Wheeler 10 for Santa Ana Valley (1-1), which won 15-9, 9-15, 15-7, 15-5.

Villa Park 3, Garden Grove 0--Shannon Gilke had 13 kills and Heather Culver 19 assists for Villa Park (1-1) which won 15-10, 15-13, 15-11.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 13, Mater Dei 5--Nina Vaughan swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, to lead top-ranked Corona del Mar (3-0).

El Dorado 18, Fullerton 0--Michelle Weisz swept in singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for host El Dorado (4-0).

Woodbridge 12, Edison 6--Sisters Ali and Courtney Tenerelli and Michelle Steifel and Danielle Hustedt swept in doubles for No. 2 Woodbridge (3-0).

Junior Nichole Kojima swept her sets, upsetting the Warriors’ No. 1 singles player Natalie Exon, 6-2, for No. 7 Edison (2-2).
