PREP EXTRA: ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : St. Anthony Hangs Tough to Beat Orange Lutheran

In a game plagued by penalties and turnovers, Long Beach St. Anthony defeated Orange Lutheran, 24-22, Friday at Brea Olinda High.

St. Anthony was penalized 16 times for 110 yards, but quarterback Josh Zak bailed out the Saints, completing 13 of 23 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown.

Orange Lutheran (1-1) took a 14-3 lead in the third quarter when Che Holloway took a screen pass from quarterback Justin Smith and ran 33 yards for a touchdown.

Holloway also broke an 80-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. He rushed for 152 yards in 11 carries.

The St. Anthony passing attack proved to be the difference. Zak passed to Joe Perry seven times for 144 yards and Eric Reese three times for 86 yards and a touchdown.

St. Anthony (2-0) took a 24-14 lead with 1 minute 30 seconds left when Reese scored on a 13-yard run. Orange Lutheran scored with 11 seconds left when Smith completed a 10-yard pass to Mike Crawford.

Smith also ran in the two-point conversion.

Smith, who was playing for Nick Odenath who has an injured shoulder, passed for 100 yards and a touchdown and ran for 64 yards.

It is the third consecutive year St. Anthony has beaten Orange Lutheran in a close game.
