PREP EXTRA: ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : SCORECARD / COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS FROM WEEK 2: FRIDAY’S RESULTS

SETTING GOALS

The county record for the longest field goal--57 yards, established in 1987 by El Dorado graduate and Detroit Tiger rookie Phil Nevin--appears in serious jeopardy this season.

Last week, it was a 52-yarder by Capistrano Valley senior Brett Thompson. On Friday, it was Irvine junior Sevan Setian who boomed a 51-yarder with a couple yards to spare in the Vaqueros’ 22-0 victory over Mission Viejo. Setian is a soccer player who kicked for Irvine’s sophomore football team last year.

“He’s real raw,” Irvine Coach Terry Henigan said. “During warm-ups he was booting them from the 40 with the wind, so I thought, ‘Why not?” The wind wasn’t blowing when Setian made the kick. He also connected easily from 37 and 30 yards.

ONE-MAN SHOW

Valencia senior Alan Manning scored all 14 points in the Tigers’ 35-14 loss to Servite Friday. Manning caught touchdown passes of 32 and 26 yards and kicked both extra points.

He also made a touchdown-saving tackle, bringing down Servite’s Vince Reed at the one after Reed had run 69 yards on the first play from scrimmage.

“Manning is a great player,” Servite Coach Larry Toner said. “That first play showed you the kind of player he is. Things looked terrible, but he never quit.”

WELCOME BACK

It was a homecoming of sorts when Coach Jim Gwyn and Acton Vasquez played Capistrano Valley Christian Friday at Saddleback College. But it wasn’t a happy one for Gwyn, whose Mustangs lost 21-8. Gwyn was head coach at Capistrano Valley Christian in 1984 and an assistant during the 1985 and ’86 seasons while his son, Jim Gwyn, was a quarterback for the Eagles.
