ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREP EXTRA : Brea Olinda Defense Stops Verdugo Hills

Mike Beamer led a strong Brea Olinda defense, which limited Tujunga Verdugo Hills to 63 yards in total offense on the way to a 24-6 nonleague victory Friday night at Tujunga.

The defensive back electrified the crowd by catching Dons’ running back Sean Standley from behind on the five-yard line after an 89-yard kickoff return. Two plays later, on third and goal from the one, Beamer tackled Standley for a one-yard loss.

Brea Olinda held on the next play as well.

Later in the quarter, Beamer recovered a fumble in the end zone to preserve a 14-6 lead. Brea Olinda (2-1) scored on the first possession of the game when Matt Kalcevich found Brian Valverde alone behind the defense for a 44-yard touchdown pass. Brea Olinda increased its lead to 14-0 when Richard Bravo scored from the three with 7:11 left in the second quarter.

Miguel Nolasco scored from the two for Verdugo Hills, but Beamer fumble recovery prevented the Dons’ from scoring with 1:53 left in the first half.

Brea Olinda took a 17-6 lead on Scott Davis’ 37-yard field goal in the third quarter. The Wildcats added a touchdown on a 24-yad run by Adam Woods with 21 seconds left in the game.

The game was marred by 293 yards in penalties, including 143 by Brea Olinda. Play was also stopped for 25 minutes when Standley took a helmet at the back and had to leave the game.
