VENTURA : Firefighters Contain Devil’s Canyon Blaze
A brush fire that burned 50 acres Sunday and Monday in a canyon northwest of Ventura was contained at 9:41 a.m. Monday.
The fire in Devil’s Canyon west of Shell Road was extinguished and the Ventura County Fire Department equipment removed by Monday afternoon, authorities said.
No one was injured and no structures were seriously threatened by the fire, which began on land leased by Vintage Petroleum Inc.
About 200 firefighters battled the blaze with support from bulldozers, helicopters and a plane. The fire, which started between 4:45 and 5 p.m. Sunday, was fanned by stiff ocean winds.
A large male deer that had gotten its antlers caught in a low-hanging power line was electrocuted and fell, bringing the sparking electrical lines down and setting off the blaze, Ventura County Fire Department officials said.
