HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : Mistakes, Burroughs Can’t Stop Canyon, 21-7

Canyon High’s football team appeared to be misfiring for most of Thursday night’s Foothill League game at Burroughs.

The Cowboys, one might say, were shooting themselves in the foot.

But Canyon overcame two interceptions, a fumble and an apparent field goal that was nullified by a penalty to beat the Indians, 21-7.

The Cowboys (4-3, 1-1 in league play) gained 247 yards on the ground and ultimately wore down the Indians (2-4-1, 0-2), a 25-man squad with only six players heavier than 200 pounds.

“I expected a better score than that, and I don’t think the coaches were very pleased,” said Cowboy running back Shaun Kelso, who rushed for two touchdowns. “But we planned on wearing them down in the second half with our power offense, and we did.”

Kelso had 145 yards in 19 carries to take the heat off a struggling Cowboy passing attack. Canyon completed one of seven passes for 19 yards with two interceptions, the team’s first of the season.

Fullback Greg Delgado added 49 yards in six carries.

Kelso scored on runs of 15 and nine yards, and Ahjeron Palmer added a two-yard plunge.

Burroughs quarterback J.K. Scott completed 15 of 32 passes for 182 yards but no touchdowns.

The Indians’ lone score came in the third quarter when Scott escaped the rush of Matt Pence and Mike Kowalczyk and scrambled 57 yards to make the score 14-7.

Glenn Adriatico had five receptions for 80 yards for Burroughs, and Ben Criscuolo caught five passes for 53. Scott has passed for more than 1,200 yards, but the Indians have lost four consecutive games.

Palmer threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage, but Burroughs failed to capitalize when Robert Barillas fumbled on the Cowboy one-yard line and Abe Montejano recovered.

Kelso scored on a 15-yard run in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Near the end of the first half, a 44-yard field goal by Canyon’s Carlos Soria was nullified by a penalty.
